Unison began in 1987 as Idea Champions, a training company providing seminars in creative thinking, collaboration, problem solving and team-building to Fortune 500 companies, including AT&T, Citibank and Met Life. In 1991, the company led its first real-time change planning conference and began working more extensively with intact teams charged with critical missions.

By 1994, the company had two divisions, a training division in New York and a consulting division, renamed Unison Business Development, located in Boulder, Colorado.
